Logic, calculations and scoring

Logic decides who sees what. Calculations add things up as people answer. Both are on the free plan, with no cap on the number of rules.

How a rule is built

A rule reads when this, do that. The when can look at an answer, a hidden field or a variable, and you can group conditions with "all of" and "any of". The do is one of: jump to a question, jump to an ending, show a block, hide a block, or change a variable.

Rules are cards in the canvas, under the question they run after. Add one from the Add button or from the question card's menu. "Show this question only when…" sits in the question's own settings instead, and calculated values are under Settings, Advanced. Once a form has a rule, a show-if question or more than one ending, a Flow button in the top bar opens a read-only map of the paths, so you can see where each kind of respondent ends up. Tally also keeps logic next to the block it applies to.

A small example: the quote request form template shows its follow-up questions only for the service the person picked.

Scoring a quiz

Scoring sits on the question you are scoring. Turn on "Score this question" in its settings, give each answer option points, and the score adds itself up as people answer.

For anything other than right-or-wrong, use a variable: set a starting value, then add, subtract, multiply, divide or set it from a logic rule. Route people to different endings by score.

Piping and hidden fields

Piping repeats an earlier answer in a later question: "Thanks, {name}. How did you find the {product} you chose?" It works in question titles, descriptions, endings and redirect URLs.

Hidden fields carry data in through the link: ?campaign=spring&user=1234. The values arrive with the response and can be used in logic, so you can segment answers without asking people who they are.

Test it before you send it

Use preview to take every path. Submit a couple of test responses as different kinds of respondent, check the endings are the ones you expect, then delete the test responses from the responses table.

When you can see where people give up, tighten the logic. Drop-off insights on Pro shows which question lost them.
